Charging Donald Trump and Destroying the Western World Order
Because nobody is above the law, and China and Russia are winning.
By far the most interesting part of last week was the January 6th Commission hearing. Not only did we hear for the first time harrowing stories from Secret Service agents guarding Mike Pence, we looked inside Donald Trump’s mind.
The tape was rolling as he recorded multiple takes for his video messages on January 6th and 7th. Notably, he refused to say “the election is over.” As if he was willing to do anything to cling to power. Democracy be damned.
So we wrote about what he should be charged with for his participation in the January 6th assault on the U.S. Capitol.
Attorney General Merrick Garland must do something. So long as he wants Americans to have some comfort that nobody - not even a politically powerful former President - is above the law.
What do you think? Is it too politically perilous to charge a former President? Especially one who will likely run for President once again? Not to mention someone who still has almost half the country supporting him.
Destroying the Western World Order
As America flirts with authoritarianism and the rest of the Western World experiences democratic turbulence (see Boris Johnson below), Russia continues to partner with China. Their trade and security partnership has reached a new level, one that directly threatens to upend and destroy the Western World order that has been in place since World War II.
We wrote a piece on how the U.S. and the West could and should address this threat. Although some thought it was exaggerating the partnership between Russia and China. Admittedly, there has been significant mistrust between them over the years. It’s more of an alliance if anything.
What did they say in The Godfather though?
The enemy of my enemy is my friend?
We also posted a TikTok on the changing world order. It has generated some discussion to say the least.
Most of the comments focus on the perils of American exceptionalism and failed attempts to sell democracy around the globe. It’s hard to argue against many of those points. America’s report card from Vietnam to Afghanistan is filled with imperialism and destruction.
However, should we ignore the overwhelming benefits of democracy by always relitigating the past? Would most people seriously want to live under authoritarian rule?
It’s hard to find democracy proponents these days, at least in the comments. So let us know your thoughts.
In other news…
Bye-bye, Boris. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave his finale from parliament this past week. It was very Arnold Schwarzeneggar-esque.
As an American, it’s difficult to appreciate the parliamentary processes at times, but perhaps it’s a good idea to have a mechanism where the party can periodically boot out a poor performing leader.
The other news that keeps us up at night is Elon. In addition to his Trumpian Twitter hysteria, Elon also apparently sleeps with his friends’ wives.
Now in addition to reneging on the Twitter deal and facing sexual assault allegations, he has revealed more of his character. He should consider running for President!
On tap…
The weather is hot. Almost everywhere in the northern hemisphere is experiencing a heat wave. Even in London where we just were!
So naturally, climate change is top of mind. We read a great book recently on the topic that we’ll review this week. It takes a different angle then most climate change literature. A refreshing take at that, filled with critical thought and hard questions.
In case you missed our review of Shoe Dog last week, be sure to check it out. Let us know your thoughts, particularly as it relates to American entrepreneurism.
Stay cool and have a good week.
