The question in the title was posed by Peter Thiel in his book, Zero to One - Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future. This link is to the review I wrote on the book, which includes why this question alone had a profound impact on me.
It goes to show that simply because you may disagree with someone (as I do with Thiel on many things), does not mean we should avoid seeking to understand the people we disagree with better.
As explained in the article, while I would not recommend using this question when interviewing someone, as Thiel likes to do, I would recommend deeply thinking about it.
The question elicits truths about the world. It forces the respondent to be bold. It requires you to risk being wrong (and potentially very wrong).
That’s why I love this question.
And I loved the book. One of the best I’ve read all year (thus far).
For my direct answer to the question, you’ll have to read to the end of my book review, but I’d love to hear your answer in the comments here. Or maybe the truth you know is so important it’s too valuable to share!
