I have sooooooooooooooo much to say here, John.

History teaches us that transformative technologies often outpace our ability to foresee their consequences. Smartphones revolutionized communication, but also brought addiction, mental health crises, and surveillance capitalism. If AI devices are truly the 'next paradigm,' their architects must commit to transparency and accountability from day one. They will NEVER do that.

Happy Wednesday to you.

I knew you would have a lot of thoughts here! Agreed that nobody will commit willingly to transparency, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try compelling them. Or at least reframing the debate/conversation, even if only a little.

Basically, the position I'm in is AI compliance.

It's a tough one to be in, and honestly, I'm not enjoying my regular work these days.

But you're right, once I'm in a position to make a change, I raise hell.

Realistically, I see both myself and my client being phased out soon.

We love playing by the rules. This slows things down.

Happy Thursday John..

It’s a tough place to be but having been in similar roles in big banks, one thing you can guarantee about humanity - whether human traders or AI developed by humans - nobody is morally pure, nor can anyone foresee unintended consequences. My point - if you’re in AI compliance, you may be one of the last humans with a job if it gets to that point (which I don’t think it will)!

I am really concerned and fearful about what this country is gonna look like in four years...

I’m concerned but not fearful. We’ve tackled big problems before and while we’ve struggled mightily, economic and technological revolutions have historically been net positives for society. I just hope we internalize the lessons from the past a little better this time and mitigate that struggle with AI.

I meant with the current government situation. I’m far less concerned about AI than I am with the oval office right now. They are removing vaccine requirements that insurance pays for. Last week I had to get a measles booster. My doctor was in disbelief he even had to discuss it with me. Every day I look at my NY Times headlines and just shake my head.

Maybe it would be wise to have a conversation or two about what "our better selves" would look like? Especially in a society of late stage capitalism and climate collapse? Maybe? Thanks for sharing your thoughts and findings here.

Precisely why I was pushing on why Jony Ive thinks AI will unlock “our better selves” if smartphones only made things worse! He needs to define what that means - completely agree.
